Software Sandbox was born from the desire to help game studios create a feature-rich and engaging experience for their communities. Regardless of the studio's size, I believe every game deserves to have a platform that empowers its community and its revenue.
Software Sandbox (also known as Epic:Data) provides studios of all sizes with a next-generation toolset to manage platforms, with a focus on video games. Our team fills an array of backend needs: E-commerce, Identity Management, Game Persistence, and Data Analytics.
I had 10+ years of experience as a tech recruiter — and my husband, Jesse, was an experienced engineer. Together, we had built great relationships with top tech executives in Austin, Dallas, and Houston — which came in handy when I decided to try something entirely new in my career. Building a company really is about knowing who you know, who you need to lean on and when, and pulling yours and others' experiences around you into a collaborative, greater good.
I didn’t immediately know that I would start a company — or have a revolutionary product that impacts so many different kinds of video games — but I did know that I wanted to be a woman in technology. I think it’s really important to encourage more women and girls to take a leap to do things that are not traditionally a woman’s career path.

During Jesse's work on the Star Wars: The Old Republic title with BioWare Austin, my husband had the idea for Software Sandbox. Knowing that I was ready for a career change and already had a tech background, he suggested I start up the company and figure out how to generate revenue. That was in 2013.
We bootstrapped through 2014, developed our product, and 2015 was our big launch. We launched with several big accounts, and have been growing tremendously ever since.
Taking out an Able loan is a good way to remain independent — and to vet your idea with family and friends, with less risk for them.
We explored other options, but Able made sense to us because of the Backer element. It’s social and engaging, like our business is with our clients. Our experience securing Backers was fantastic. All of the team members at Able were very responsive and remain responsive even after funding.
We’re most excited about growing our organization to the next level. We've been bootstrapping our efforts through sales for two years, so it’s exciting to have a bit of working capital to help accelerate some of our plans.
